CURRICULUM LINKED SCIENCE WORKSHOPS

science workshops with Devon Science – chemistry 2

States of Matter & Chemical Reactions

Our most popular workshop with hands on chemistry differentiated for all ages. We include colour changing, fizzing, and erupting reactions. We bring chemistry equipment for them. Pupils inflate balloons with CO2, feel non-newtonian fluids and have slime-tastic fun or fizzy bath bomb making, but not everything is as it appears, with surprises along the way! Loads of hands-on educational fun and a chance to get a bit messy. This workshop is perfect match to our Chemistry Lab Adventures Assembly, so everyone can enjoy an all-school science day.

science workshops with Devon Science – Dahl

Phizz Whizzing Chemistry - Science in stories

Lets blend up parts of the curriculum! Here we have a literacy & science combo! This diddly Roald Dahl inspired chemistry workshop is truly giganticus! After an intro to the book George's Marvellous Medicine where we pull out Dahl's science words, youngsters recreate George’s medicine. They can also make snozzcumber juice (aka slime - to keep). A lovely cross-curricular session, showing that science is everywhere!

science workshops with Devon Science – materials

Materials & Smart Materials

An interactive introduction to materials & smart materials with fun demo's with hydrogel, polymorph, thermochromic paint, UV dyes, conductive textiles etc and with real examples showing how useful they are to us. . Pupils sort various materials by appearance, magnetism, malleability, transparency, composition, etc. They then carry out an experiment to find the true colour of copper & make a colour changing smart material bracelet to keep.

science workshops with Devon Science -rocks

Rocks & Minerals ** NEW **

Pupils examine and group our selection of igneous, sedimentary & metamorphic rocks. Learn how they are similar and what they are made of. They'll see typical tests carried out on sample rocks and soils, such as the MOH's Hardness test and pH tests. Then children investigate to find out which of 3 soil samples they think is from Mars, by observing texture, colour, presence of crystals then testing the pH and whether they contain organic material.

science workshops with Devon Science – forces

Forces with Air Powered Cars & Rockets

Using materials we provide, pupils engineer an air powered vehicle to travel the furthest. Children consider the forces involved and watch Newton’s Laws of Motion in action. We have class sets of these, so everyone can have a go! If you'd like your pupils to keep their cars this will incur an additional cost £2 per car.  For younger children we replace the cars with stomp rocket making. This workshop fits perfectly with the Force Frontiers Science Assembly which explains all the forces involved in these cars & rockets. This means that this topic can become an all-school science day.

science workshops with Devon Science – animals

Animals including Humans

Active learning on anatomy and physiology of any body part! What do they look like, how do they work and what they do? Various hands-on experiments and activities to align with your learning outcomes,  e.g. CO2 & O2 gas experiments,  measuring heart rate & Blood pressure, blood typing, edible poop making, owl pellet dissecting. Various options depending on your LOs. Very educational, delivered by our knowledgeable scientific staff.

science workshops with Devon Science – robots

Animals and their Environment (or Electricity/Circuits)

This session is can either be a fun hands-on introduction to circuits or to complement the topic of adaptation. Youngsters build large motorised, vibrating robots using a range of craft materials. We'll bring our resin-preserved non-UK insects and bugs to show examples of interesting adaptations, or our Van de Graaff generator if you've book this as part of a electronic topic. Additional charge of £4 per robot if you want children to keep their robots. See these robots in action here.

science workshops with Devon Science -microbiology

Microbe Mania

An introduction to microbiology from a microbiologist! See live microbes and bacteria using our digital microscope. Older children can prep their own pond water and other samples to view under our student microscopes.  Learn how we culture and study microbes in the lab with agar plates. Make snot-slime and / or make your own super bug model. Find out how easily bacteria can spread and how to keep the bad ones away to stay healthy. This workshop will go well with our new assembly show for schools, called Gut Feeling.

science workshops with Devon Science forensic

Forensic Science

Oh no - a crime has been committed! Help us spot the clues in our crime scene (preferably set up in a hall). We have a police report and 4 suspects - listen to the clues who do you think could have dunnit?! Pupils will work towards identifying the prime suspect using fingerprinting; blood grouping; chemical tests and hair/fibre microscopy analysis. This workshop is excellent for practicing "working scientifically" as they have to work through a logical process and record data. Also links perfectly to a Crime & Punishment topic.

science workshops with Devon Science – chemistry

Bespoke / Cross curricular

If a topic isn't covered here or you want to run something a little bit different, please contact us. We are very creative and love to come up with new ideas.

Perhaps we can link the science to a topic your class is currently studying. For example, at Stoke Hill Infant's School in Exeter we designed a cross-curricular science workshop for their literacy topic "Would You Rather?"

We created a Maths-Science day for all the pupils at South Molton Community Primary. Our Forensics workshop is used for the Crime and Punishment topic for another local school.
